We are big pizza makers in our house. We love making up our own pizza and calzones on a Friday night...or any day of the week for that matter. It's fun, easy and gets the kids involved in the kitchen! These heart shaped calzones are adorable and so versatile. They would make a great party snack for adults or afun meal for the kids (just the right size for their little hands).
Ingredients:
- Pre made pizza dough (or use my recipe below)
- 16 oz package of mozzarella cheese
- Your favorite marinara sauce (click here for my homemade fav)
- Pepperoni or any of your favorite fill ins.
- Heart shaped cookie cutter
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Roll out dough on floured surface until the dough is about 1/2 inch thick. Begin cutting your heart shapes with the cookie cutter placing shapes onto a floured surface until you are ready to begin working with them.
- While kids are cutting out their shapes, prepare your cheese and fillings making sure your fillings are chopped in small pieces to be able to fit inside your heart.
- Once you have all your hearts cut out begin laying them onto a cookie sheet or pizza stone. Top half of the hearts with a small amount of cheese and desired add ins. Once you have half of the hearts completed place another heart on top to assemble the calzone. Crimp all along the edges to seal so the filling will stay inside.
- Bake at 400 for 10-15 minutes or until slightly golden. Serve with marinara for dipping!
Pizza Dough
3 cups flour
2 tsp yeast
1 1/2 cup warm water
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tbl olive oil
Mix yeast, water and sugar allowing to proof for 5-10 minutes (it will become frothy). While yeast is proofing measure out the flour and add the salt into the bowl with the flour. Once yeast has become frothy add into the bowl of flour and add in your olive oil. Mix until dough is well incorporated (may still be quite sticky). Pour dough onto floured surface and add in small amounts of flour as you knead. Continue until dough has become smooth (about 7 minutes). Place in a warm place and cover with a kitchen towl and allow to rise for about 1 hour.
Lucy~
Lucy, love the recipe! I'm going to try the hearts for valentine's day. I like your pizza dough recipe, too, but I'm lazy, so I use the "dough" cycle on my bread maker to mix and knead! I just suggest dumping the dough out before the "rise" part of the cycle because usually it will overflow and stick to the inside of your breadmaker. I dump it into an oiled bowl and cover it with a towel, then place it in a warm place (my garden window) to rise.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Good tip with the bread maker....I would be lazy too if I had one :) Enjoy the calzones!!
